The Journey Begins

As a dedicated conservation biologist, I've spent six years tracking the elusive frosted elfin butterfly. Initially, the task seemed insurmountable, but fieldwork revealed a promising path forward.

A Tiny Target with Big Implications

The frosted elfin, with its modest wingspan and understated appearance, proved to be a formidable subject. Yet, our perseverance led to the discovery of 188 records across 52 sites in nine Oklahoma counties.

From Rarity to Recognition

These findings allowed us to reclassify the frosted elfin's status from critically rare (S1) to a species of concern (S3), aiding in its conservation.

Implications for Endangered Species Act

The surge in data is timely, as the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service reviews the frosted elfin's status, potentially impacting its protection under the Endangered Species Act.

This blog post is a testament to the power of collaborative conservation efforts and the importance of protecting even the smallest of species.
