Recording Monarchs

Until when should I continue to checklist a Monarch? I’m seeing mostly singles everyday.

It’s a good idea to keep an eye out for butterflies all year round, especially with the way climate change is affecting their migratory patterns. Researchers find it really useful to know when the last butterfly is spotted, as it helps them understand how climate change is disrupting their flight schedules. Hope that helps answer your question!

Good to know. Thank you!

I think this applies to all butterflies. Up here in Quebec everyday now we think we are seeing the last of the season! Only one monarch is an achievement! It is mid september and only 5 degrees last night.

Just two days ago in Toronto in a nearby parkland with scattered flowering shrubs, particularly buddleia, I counted 112 Monarchs in about 2 hours. They were all fresh and likely in migration along Lake Ontario. This means there will probably be lots more to come, so we should all keep monitoring them for some time.
