Here’s a sneak peak at our newest butterfly. We have known since the first atlas that we had an undescribed species among us, and finally the work has been done to formally lay out the evidence and describe it for science. You can read the paper (rather dense) online at A cryptic new species of tiger swallowtail (Lepidoptera, Papilionidae) from eastern North America. It is called the Midsummer Tiger Swallowtail. I have added it already to eButterfly taxonomy and I have just started the long process of IDing those I can. I will be writing the story up as a blog post and creating some ID tips and a field guide plate soon to help everyone. Meanwhile, check out the paper, at least the abstract, and stay tuned for me soon!
