Question from email:
I submitted this photo to my checklist on e-butterfly and used “AI” to identify it as a Crossline Skipper. However, looking at a few sources, I would have identified it as a Tawny-edged. The “AI” suggestion was 87% percent with Tawny-edged only 10%. Is it appropriate to always go with the “AI” suggestion? It certainly is a great tool.

Definitely do not go with AI if you think it is wrong. It is just as you say, a tool. We created it as a helper and to flag things that might potentially be identified incorrectly and need humans to examine. It will get better and better as we provide more correctly identified material, but again, it will always just be an aid or tool we use, not a definitive determination. That will always be people like all of us providing IDs, discussion and commentary when needed. For folks just stating out though, it really can help get them hooked on butterflies!

I love the AI tool. But I usually verify it with field guides. But it really is a great feature !!!
