As some of you have found, there is a good Red Admiral flight in eastern US right now that is just hitting Vermont. Get out there and count up those red admirals and submit checklists to eButterfly! The last great flight was 2012. We’d love to document this in great detail. I am working on a blog post now with more details about this neat migration. Thanks!
They’ve been flying through my North Pawlet, VT property nonstop all day! Heading generally northward. Everywhere I looked. Often in what seemed like flocks of perhaps 6 flying as a group. Other times just one after another. Sometimes they visited dandelions or other plants, but often just flew through the area. I did a couple timed counts and will submit the details. One count was 27 in 5 minutes flying through an area about 20 yards wide (and I know I missed some!). Fun!
And now only 1 seen in the same area the following morning.
I whipped up a quick blog post about it at the Vermont Atlas of Life blog. Check it out at Red Alert! The Admirals are Coming | Vermont Atlas of Life.
And keep reporting those checklist counts with effort to eButterfly! We are getting really great data on this migration! High count, low count, zero count…it all counts!
