Correcting duplicate locations

I inadvertently created duplicate locations for the same location when trying to add new checklists for it. How do I correct this so that all checklists appear under one location name? On eBird, it’s easy to correct this by simply merging location pins on the map. As far as I can tell, this can’t be done on eButterfly.

Hi @cgkoonce , thanks for your message

I will illustrate my answer with an example. Let’s say Location A is the original location, and Location B is a duplicate of Location A.

If you only have one checklist attached to Location B and you want to move it to Location A, you can go to the checklist details page of that checklist and click the small pencil icon below the map. This will allow you to edit Step 1 (Checklist Location Details). From there, click the tab that says “My Recent Locations” and start typing the name of Location A. Once you see it, select it and click “Save.” You can refer to the infographic below for a visual guide.

If you already have multiple locations attached to Location B, then that change will need to be done from the backend. For this, simply send me an email at ebutterfly@vtecostudies.org, indicating which locations need to be merged, and I will be happy to do it for you.

We have plans to add a merging feature that users can use in the future, but such a process is quite demanding on our servers, so we are proceeding cautiously to avoid any unexpected consequences.

I hope this answers your question. Please let me know if there’s anything else I can help you with.
