eButterfly Mobile App

Apologies if this has been discussed before or is in the works but I believe an eButterfly mobile app for list-submitting would be incredibly helpful. Something similar to eBird’s mobile app would work well in my opinion, but I don’t think the “explore” and “my eBird” features are necessary to translate into an eButterfly app. Personally I submit eBird lists only as frequently as I do because of the app. When I’m out birding I can just open the app on my phone, click start to track my distance and time, and input the species that I encounter as I go. It would be great to be able to do something like this for eButterfly. If I had to go to the eBird website and make my list after the fact I would probably only use it when I see a personal new species, but because it’s so simple to make lists with the app I do a list basically every time I go out, and then just upload my photos onto that list through the website when I get home. I don’t really use the other features on the eBird app like explore and my eBird because I find it easier to just do that stuff on the website, so I really think solely the list-submitting aspect would greatly increase the ease of creating eButterfly checklists which would in turn greatly increase the complete lists and data on eButterfly itself. I understand that a feature request for an entire app is a big ask, but I genuinely believe it’s a fundamental part of creating and expanding a community that continues to submit complete checklists. I would love to know if there has been any talk about something like this.

Thank you so much for your contribution and welcome to the forum.

Actually, we’ve been working in developing an app for the last year and we’re getting quite close to a final product. Our developer expects to have it ready by July :crossed_fingers:t3:

I’m impressed to see that, the description you provided for the app is quite an accurate description of what we’re working on!!

Stay tuned, and we’ll release a lot more info about it in the coming months

Wow that’s super exciting! I can’t wait to hear more about it.

In the past I have been posting submissions to I Naturalist. I very simple program to use. Vermont Natural History of Life picks up some of my submissions from there rather than me having to post of another site. Is there a way for eButterfly to do the same?

Thanks for your question @chestnut123

eButterfly uploads all its database in real-time to the Global Biodiversity Information Facility (GBIF), and many regional, national and international projects, including the Vermont Natural History of Life, grab that information directly and freely from there for their projects. You can find our GBIF page here: https://www.gbif.org/dataset/cf3bdc30-370c-48d3-8fff-b587a39d72d6

If your question is more about being able to pull your observations from iNat and add them to our database automatically, that is a bit more tricky. Mainly because the information that iNat asks their users on every submission is fairly vague and not checklist formatted (which has way less scientific value), so it is hard for us to homologate databases. We’ve asked them a few times to collaborate with us in that regard to make things easier, but we are still waiting for an answer.

That being said, we are working on a tool that will allow, if not to merge the database, at least to see both datasets simultaneously from a Map. I would have to jump to the technical stuff to describe how it works (happy to do it if you desire), but it seems it will work great! Stay tuned for that!
